An Introduction of Social PsychologyFriday, July 31, 2015 @ 8:49 AM
An Overview
Today was our first class of
Social Psychology with Miss Hanis Japri, our previous lecturer for Work and
Motivation subject. At the first place, we were wondering what kind of subject
it was because our senior did not have to take it because it is a new subject.
Some of us started to protest because it is not fair but I am sure after having
the first lecture all my friends including me would feel enthusiastic and motivated to learn more about this course.
When the word SOCIAL comes across
my mind, it surely must be about the society while for PSYCHOLOGY it is the study of
human mind and behavior. My first interpretation about Social Psychology is the
study of society’s mind and behavior however the general definition of social
psychology is our behavior influence by the presence attitudes, feelings and
other (society /environment). In scientific view, it is a scientific field that
seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior and thought in
social situation.
After learning the definition
itself, I realized that this course actually aims to discover how individual
behaves based on the presence of the others (other factors). In this life, we
are shaped by what are surrounding us such as other people’s actions, feelings
and the attitudes. From my experience, in my family particularly, I noticed
that how I behave is influenced by my family surrounding especially my dad.
Among the three siblings my attitude is like my father as I am more closer with
my dad. He is very cautious about money and he do not like to waste money
buying something that is not beneficial for the future and something that is
used just for fun. What I can see from my father’s behavior, I have all that
things. I become miserly and cautious in spending money at the young age where
I bet young generation like me are not concerned about it and every time I want
to buy something even though I want it so much I will not simply buy it. I will
definitely think twice or perhaps more than that. Before this I just thought
about the genetic influence from my dad to me but now I know it is because of the
theory in social psychology where my behavior is significantly influenced by
his behavior. Next, the way we speak to each other also depends on how others
speak to us and build up our social identity. This is my first experience where
I use my name rather than use ‘I’ (aku). First time I used my name, it was very
awkward to mention my name by myself as before this I kept thinking negatively
that I felt annoyed with the relationship that have name-calling in it. But
then I have to adapt with my surrounding because majority of my new friends
used the name-calling and I just did not realize when it became a nature in our
friendship .
For some people this might be a
minor example but from this obvious situation we can see that social psychology actually relates to us in
every single aspect of our daily lives especially in family relationship and
friendship as it influences our behavior and helps us to conform our identity.
Let us explore the extraordinary world of Social Psychology!

Core Values of Social Psychology
The importance
of core values is not only essential for scientist in doing their research but
also important to all people to ensure validity and reliability of information
we received. For example, I would like to emphasize a recent case occurred in
Malaysia specifically in Lowyat which involved a group of man and seller of
oppo smart phone. Within several days, the news turns out to be racial incident
topic thus this brawl appear to be hot topic. The reason of this consequence
happened because most of Malaysian citizen tend to believe in what they heard
without searching the truth. In reality according to the official news berita
harian, the incident happened after a man found that he got deceived and was
given fake device by the seller of oppo phone. There is nothing to do with
racial incident argument. Supposedly, we have to be skepticism and refuse to
believe conclusions without strong verification.
Next, one of the core values in
the study of social psychology is open-minded. In conducting a research one
must ready to accept others’ evidence as valid although it may be clashed with
one’s initial. In this world, there are many countries like Netherlands,
Iceland and Denmark support gay marriage which allow freedom to marry with the
same sex. When I watched a video, Ellen Lee DeGeneres revealed about her life
experience which she married with her partner Portia de Rossi because she want
someone that understand her the most. She believed that Rossi love and comforts
her better than her male friends and boyfriends. Then, I try not to judge her
opinion because she has her own reason for doing that. (Wan Rawanis)
Accuracy is also one of the core
values that is applicable to use in our daily life. When we heard some rumours
about an issue, we should gather and evaluate all the information that we got
to analyse whether the information is true or not. As we view our society
today, they like to spread rumours about an issue in social media like
‘twitter’ and ‘facebook’, and other people tends to believe that without making
any research about that issue. Sometimes, I also be the one who believe about
the news without find any evidence about the validity of the story. But after I
studied about accuracy, I realized that I should make a research before
believing the rumours that I heard. For the example, Malaysian was shocked with
the news of debris of a plane was found near Madagascar. Malaysian thought that
the debris was belong to the plane of MH370 as that plane had missing for a
year. People tends to post about that on ‘twitter’ and ‘facebook’ by saying,
the debris of MH370 had found, but the case is still in investigation. We as a people
that heard about that should not believe 100% of the rumours as it still in
investigation and we should not spread that to other people. We should wait
until the investigation is finish before we jumped into any conclusion that
made by ourselves.
The
last core values that can be used in our daily life is objectivity. In
objectivity, we should minimize bias while obtaining and evaluating the all the
information that we get to complete our research. People nowadays like to be
biased on every single thing that they heard and knew. If we want to know the
validity of a news, we should avoid any prejudice or stereotyping in order to
minimize the bias in ourselves. In my personal life, I as a man tends to
disagree everything that I learnt and heard about feminist without making any
further research about it. I believe that other man also have the same
mentality as me by thinking that feminist is irrelevant to be learnt and ignore
it without trying to understand the objective of learning about it. But now, I
realized that by minimize prejudice and stereotyping about women, I can find
the real objective why I learnt about it other than I got new information about
women’s life. This objectivity is very crucial in conducting research and to be
applied in our daily life. (Nurul Afiqah)
Fundamental Principles of Social Psychology
Bruce Lee once
said that ‘ obey principles without being bound to them’. In Social Psychology,
there are basically 5 fundamental principles that have been the core of this
significant subject and have been used since people first established it. These
principles act as a firm stand in Social Psychology that needs to be understood
clearly in order to comprehend ourselves about the nature of Social Psychology.
These principles can also be significantly related to situation in our daily
lives and reflected the ways we socialise with people around us.
The first
principle we would like to point out is social interaction. We bet everyone is
also able to guess that social psychology is all about the society and
environment as it has the term ‘social’ in it. Indeed, social psychology is
truly about understanding what society is all about. Social interaction denotes
the way we interact with people. From what we have understood, social
interaction is a must in our daily lives; we communicate and interact with
people on daily basis to convey information. As we can see in the real world,
social interaction can happen in a lot ways and it is no longer limited to
face-to-face interaction. We communicate on social medias; Facebook,Twitter,
Instagram and Skype. We believe interaction is not only restricted to verbal
messages but also nonverbal messages. The ways people post pictures on
Instagram, Tweet on Twitter and sometimes post videos on youtube can also be
the mediums where people use to communicate their feelings, express their ideas
and impose their ideologies. On Instagram, people post pictures of the with
captions that portay the information they want to convey to their followers. If
they are disappointed or sad, they would write captions that tell people that
they are having a bad day or they are having a severe fever or etc.
The next
principle,I would say is a bit correlated with the first principle and it is
cognitive processes. What can be extracted
from cognitive processes is the method the information is received. The way we judge and extract the information
that is being conveyed by the people we are interacting with actually includes
in cognitive processes. We somehow notice that emotions, biasness,
discrimination and prejudice somehow affect the way we receive the information.
An example that we would like to point out is when a person strongly believes in white superiority will
definitely tend to believe that Black’s movement to seek for racial equality is
stupid and irrelevant. And for people who believe in LGBT movement that seeks
for marriage equality tend to express emotions such as anger and hatred when
they encounter with people who are homophobic (having a wide range of negative
attitudes towards homosexuality) because they believe the belief they are holding
to is completely right. Another obvious example can be seen when a guy is
misogynistic ( having the belief that men are more superior than women), he
will tend to perceive feminism as a stupid movement to seek for gender
equality. That means he is somehow biased because of his gender.
The third major
principle is environmental variables. This principle stresses out that the
physical world does impact our behaviour such as the weather, smell and noise. We
notice that our acts are significantly influenced by the condition of physical
world. For example, we tend to be more hot-tempered when the weather is hot.
This is due to the uncomfortability that has caused by the extreme
weather makes us easier to get angry even over small matters . Getting angry over
silly things such as ‘why is the drink so hot?!’ ‘why is the cat sleeping in
front of the door?!’ and ‘ why are those people staring at us like we’ve just
killed people?!” are the examples of small matters people get angry at when
they are particularly not comfortable with the weather. And when we are at a place that has a very
unpleasant smell probably because it is situated nearby a rubbish dump, we tend
to feel dizzy and uneasy and that affects our behavior. We tend to behave
negatively and we do not feel like talking to people and sometimes we feel a bit emotional due to the
unfomfortability that is caused by the smelly smell.
The fourth major principle is cultural context
which relates the norms and cultural transmission of the society we are living
in to our behaviors. The way we were taught and instilled with the norms and
cultures of the society we grew up in actually does have a huge impact on our
behavior. All of us are basically Malays and we somehow taught that Chinese
people actually took our rights as the natives of this country and that is why
they are economically more successful than the Malays. As we grew older, we
then realized that it is just a stereotype which generalizes that Chinese are
oppressive towards Malays. Comparatively, we can observe that some Malays are
too lazy to improve their quality or well-being of their lives because they are
way too comfortable with their current lives and they disregard what is going
to happen in the future (the value of Malaysian Ringgit declines or political
instability happens), and perhaps that is why they are economically far behind
Chinese in our country. Malay is also proven to be one of the races in Malaysia
that has the highest number of drug addicts and crime cases recorded. Besides,
in Malay, there is also a belief that claims ‘Women belong in the kitchen’. In
our perspective, we believe that it is completely a misogynistic and sexist
statement that downgrades women. It means that no matter how successful a woman
is, she will definitely end up in the kitchen. Feminism somehow greatly opposes
this notion because it somehow means women have a lower rank than men in the society.
Women should be free to choose what they want to be in their lives and they can
be more successful than men if they want to. ‘Women belong in the kitchen’
reflects that women have a limitation to achieve what they are looking forward
for in life.
The last major principle would be the
biological factors. Indeed, people might not see biological factors as the main
influence of human behaviors but they actually do. Biological factors might
also not affect human behaviors entirely but it does have a small influence in
the way we behave or socialize in the environment or society we live in.
Genetically, we inherited genetic components or materials from our parents and
hence, it is not something peculiar if we possess attitudes that are more or less similar to
them. From what I (Shazrul) concern, my parents are so approachable and they
can talk to newly-met strangers for hours like they have known them for 10
years. And surprisingly I am also an approachable person and I perceive myself
as person who easily gets comfortable with new people I meet. I do not feel
awkward to disclose to people whom I have just met . Often we see that abusive
parents who abuse their children regularly (physically or mentally) will
definitely develop abusive behaviors in their children. The children will
perhaps abuse their children as revenge towards their parents who once abused
them when they were children. They tend to be more aggressive and hot-tempered
t compared to children whose parents are gentle and caring.

Research Method : Rethinking The Psychology of Tyranny; BBC Prison Study by Haslam and Reicher
The BBC Prison study uses several research
methods which are field investigation and pilot study. Field investigation is actually
an experiment that is conducted in a natural environment of the participants
but the situations are artificially set up. Personally, I used this type of
method several times towards a few of my girlfriends. Every day, my girlfriends
and I always have dinner at 8 together but as usual, only a few can make it on
time. Since we are a bunch of cold hearted girls, we’ll just leave the late
comers and go grab our food first. There was this particular day when one of
the late comers says that she will follows up later but then changes her mind. she
asked us to bring back the food she ordered and I replied her whatsapp by
saying that I do not want to order her food and that she should come and get it
herself. My friends asked me to give that kind of fake respond because we want
to see her reaction. We concluded that she is a sensitive girl based on her
final respond. After a few minutes, we told her that we are joking and testing
an experiment on her. Secondly, the pilot study is where the researcher selects
a few people and tries to study them. I had used this method during high school
when I gang up with my friends to brainwash a few of problematic students (based
on reports from other student and amount of demerit they did). As a member of disciplinary
board, we were so passionate to carry out our full responsibilities and
corrected problematic students. During the brain wash sessions, we asked many
questions and as a final result, all the misunderstanding and ambiguity were
solve. Basically, even though all these research methods seem to exist only in
the textbook, we actually do practices all the methods when conducting our
daily life or while facing certain situation.
(Siti Hana Diyana)
Whether we realize it or not, social psychology is a part of our life because it
shapes most of our behaviour. People are connected with each other as each of
us is influenced by one another. This is because the concept of social identity
and conformity lead us to follow what our society does. There are a few
principles under social psychology that are being applied in our daily life
such as biological factor, social interaction, cognitive process,
environmental, and cultural context. Each of these aspects will shape us according
to the law of social psychology itself and determine what kind of behaviour
that we have. The Social psychology have provided a few guidelines for us to
study or conduct research about a wide range of topic with a set of core values
included skepticism, open minded, objective and accuracy. These set of core
values of social psychology can be practised in our daily life when we want to
interpret or analysis a certain behaviour that we see and follow the ethics of
core value to accomplish our work. Besides observing our behaviour and other
people, we also need to consider the method that we use to conduct an
experiment or a case study. The method that we use will affect the results for
our study and data that will be collected. It also gives us an idea that our
action or behavior that we will take in our daily life will have their own
consequences. Last but not least, social psychology helps us to understand more
on how people’s behaviours are greatly influenced by other factors and by
discovering this course more deeply we can recognise ourselves better.
